DO MUSEUMS TRUST EXHIBITION DESIGNERS?

Recent years have seen an exciting proliferation of sustainability initiatives in the English museum sector. Museums of Science, Ethnology, Anthropology, Natural History and specially Children´s museums have demonstrated more flexibility in the adoption of Sustainable principles than Fine Arts museums.

A survey conducted among a selection of Fine Arts museums and galleries in the UK was done in the summer of 2014 to assess their implementation of sustainable actions in temporary exhibitions, focusingon three categories:

It was found that organisations with sustainable policies do not hire the services of architects or lighting designers in their temporary exhibitions for two reasons:

Organisations without defined sustainable policies hire external designers more often, without necessarily requiring the implementation of green practices, however exceptions were found where the exhibitions managers do care about these issues when hiring their services.
